Promoted by the Office of the Special Representative of the United Nations Secretary-General on Violence against Children and many partners, the High Time initiative aims to end violence against children thanks to the transformative power of governments’ commitment and action, organizations and communities’ engagement, and people’s time and talent. 2016 marks the tenth anniversary of the adoption by the General Assembly of the United Nations Study on Violence against Children. It is also the twentieth anniversary of the first World Congress against the commercial sexual exploitation of children. Both the Study and the Stockholm Agenda for Action set in motion processes that have resulted in important strides in the protection of children from violence.
2016 starts the process of implementation of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development. The World’s new development agenda includes the elimination of violence against children amongst its priorities, including through a distinct target (Target 16.2). This is a historic achievement and a strategic moment to consolidate the gains made, grasp the lessons learned and redouble efforts to trigger a dynamic process of change to build a world where all children can grow up free from violence, leaving no one behind.
It’s High Time to transform this momentum into an inclusive and unstoppable movement.
Stimulating and inspiring action
In the count-down to 2030, High Time to End Violence against Children is an innovative Talent and Time Raising effort aiming at stimulating and supporting positive, visible and concrete initiatives designed to end violence against children worldwide and reach violence-related targets in the Sustainable Development Goals, especially target 16.2.
Using ICTs, the Internet and Social Media and inspired by the online Crowdsourcing model, this initiative will offer a platform for governments, organizations, institutions, children and adults to express commitment to children’s freedom from violence and support action to prevent and respond to violence.
Informing and monitoring progress
The High Time Initiative will facilitate access to valuable information and resources to support and monitor progress in global efforts to end of violence against children. This will include information on ratification of child rights treaties, enactment of national legislation to protect children from all forms of violence, adoption of national strategies to prevent and respond to violence against children, development of data surveys, and establishment of child sensitive mechanisms to address incidents of violence and assist child victims.
By joining the High Time initiative, governments, organizations, institutions, companies and individuals are invited to sign a pledge and commit to join or create a circle of non-violence. Circles of no violence expand and merge, create waves and ripples, in an organic and always growing movement, reaching out for more and better.
It’s High Time to stand up for children and drive for results.
