We will maintain a detailed map of the legality and prevalence of corporal punishment, with individual reports on every state

The Global Initiative to End All Corporal Punishment of Children (GI) pledges to continue to work with partners, including the SRSG on VAC, to pursue universal prohibition and elimination of all corporal punishment and other cruel and degrading punishment of children  – the most common form of violence against children— in all settings in every state globally. As a basis for this advocacy, we will maintain the GI’s detailed map of the legality and prevalence of corporal punishment, with individual reports on every state and territory identifying necessary changes in legislation.

We will continue to systematically brief UN human rights Treaty Bodies, the UPR and regional human rights mechanisms to maximise human rights pressure on states to take necessary legal and other action and freely provide technical assistance with the process at international, regional and national level. We will identify and encourage use of all legislative opportunities to make progress. We will track and disseminate information on progress and delay in achieving prohibition and elimination of violent punishment; on states’ fulfilment of their immediate obligation to realise the right of all children to respect for their human dignity, physical integrity and to equal protection under the law.

Beyond our specific focus, we hope to work collaboratively with others to build a sustainable map of the legality of all forms of violence as an essential tool in advocating for the prohibition and elimination of all forms of violence against children.
